  • 24K signifies 100% pure gold

  • GF - Gold Filled (gold that is bonded to a base metal like copper

  • RGP stamp which means the piece has a rose gold plate

  • 925S and a Gold mark like, 925S 18K GP means that the item is Silver coated with that purity of gold.

Platinum Stamps

Jewelry markings found on platinum jewelry are used to signify that the piece of jewelry contains 900 parts per 1000 parts platinum.

  • 900 Platinum

  • 900 Plat

  • Plat 900

  • Pt900

  • 900pt

  • When looking at jewelry it is important to understand the percentage of precious metal used in the creation of the jewelry piece. Platinum is often combined with palladium or rhodium two other precious metals.

  • If the percentage of palladium is higher than 100 parts your jewelry will be marked with a PD stamp, which is used as this metal identifier.

Gold Plating/bonding

  • These stamps are used to identify gold plating and bonding and are typically found on watches but can also be used on other jewelry.

  • GE - gold electroplated

  • HE - heavy gold electroplated

  • GP - gold-plated

  • GF - Gold Filled (gold that is bonded to a base metal like copper)

Other Stamps

  • Stainless Steel jewelry markings are used to indicate that the piece is made from stainless steel. Not only is this metal affordable but it’s also hypoallergenic, which makes it a popular choice among people with sensitive skin.

  • Check for a hallmark like "316L," "304," or "S Steel," which indicates the type and grade of stainless steel. They are usually engraved on a less conspicuous part of the piece.

  • These stamps shouldn’t be confused with sterling silver identifiers.

  • Antique stamps are used to identify antique jewelry. the jewelry markings usually start with a capital A.

  • The “A” is usually accompanied by other letters that stand for the type of finish or plating used for the piece of jewelry.

  • A diamond stamp inside a fine jewelry ring means that the ring’s design includes a gemstone of some kind but not necessarily a diamond.

Why is my 925 Sterling Silver tarnished?

925 Sterling Silver jewelry can develop tarnish over time due to a natural oxidation process. This occurs when the silver comes into contact with sulfur-containing gases in the air, leading to the formation of silver sulfide on the surface of the jewelry. This tarnishing process is natural and can be managed with proper care and maintenance.

  • Air pollution: Sulfur gases can be present in air molecules or emitted by certain substances, such as rotting fruits

  • Other substances: Sulfur can also be transferred to jewelry from other sources, such as beans, rubber bands, exhaust, leather, and cellophane

  • Products like perfumes, shampoos, and gels can also contribute to tarnishing

  • Humidity can speed up the tarnishing process

  • The acid in your skin can also contribute to tarnishing

  • Silver may also react immediately with harsh cleaning chemicals

Tarnishing is the development of a dark coating or tarnish on silver, which is a natural process. Although it may be unattractive, it is not permanent and can be easily eliminated through polishing. To prevent tarnishing, consider the following tips:

  • Store jewelry in airtight containers in low-humidity places, such as zip-lock bags or jewelry boxes

  • Clean jewelry with warm water and a soft cloth

  • Avoid leaving jewelry on display when you're done using it

  • Try not to wear rings all day every day

  • Avoid wearing any jewelry in the bath, shower, while swimming, or when cleaning.

  • Use a tarnish treatment like Medallion Tarnish Defender or Goddard's Silver Care Liquid Dip.
